TEACHING ASSISTANCE

In the previous post, I discussed the observation class. Well, this time I will tell you how I helped my cooperating teacher and have teaching assistance. In teaching assistance, I helped to operate laptops, power points and helped to condition pupils in the classroom.  . I am very happy when I can interact with them. They are good, smart and diligent pupils .

I also help mam dely to correct assignments from pupils
When I help mam dely to correct the task of the pupils. Sometimes I'm confused with their writing, some are good writing, some are  not readable hehehe....Even so, I remain happy when correcting their assignments. I can know the abilities they have.

He drew something for me, and apparently he wrote it like that hehe

There are some pupils who always help me to tidy up books in the classroom, some sometimes help me tidy up tables and chairs in the classroom. There are even some of them who always wait for me to go home and get out of school together.

The three of them who always accompany me when I go home from school. They always ask me a lot of questions, sometimes asking about the country of Indonesia, culture in Indonesia, sometimes they also ask funny things and make me laugh. He's in black, he's very active so I can't take pictures with him. Sorry , the picture is blurry because he can't keep quiet.

PEDAGOGICAL CONTENTS Observation Week

 Teaching method
Based on the observation during the 1st week of the program, the teaching methods used bythe teacher during the lesson are lecture method and discussion method.
a.       Lecture method
Lecture method is an oral presentation of information by the instructor. It is the method of relaying factual information which includes principles, concepts, ideas and all theoretical knowledge about a given topic. In lecture method, the instructor tells, explains, describes or relates whatever information to the students through listening and understanding. This method is therefore a teacher-centered method. The instructor is very active, doing all the talking. The teacher explained about the topic and give question for students so they can be active in class. The advantages of the lecture method areit saves time, the topic are covered, and permits flexibility. Meanwhile, the disadvantages are including boredom, passive students, and uneven gain of knowledge among the students.

b.      Discussion method
Discussion method is a method which group discussion techniques are used to reach the learning objectives.  Discussion method is used to stimulate thinking, interest and securing the student participation. Students in class will be more active and cooperative in the group activity. The discussion method also can increase students interest, acceptance and commitments. The advantages of the discussion method are increased student knowledge and experience, which results in more permanent learning.  The disadvantages are time-consuming, unwillingness of students during the group activity, and failure in reaching the objectives of lesson.

 Learning materials and innovation
Based on the observation during the 1st week of the program, the teacher used learning materials which are includingtextbooks, DLP, PowerPoint presentation, short video, and white/blackboard. In the first lesson, the teacher gave the motivational activity using video about the topic. Motivation activity is proven effective to increase the students curiosity and activity during the lesson.

LET ME SHARE MY STORY WHEN I'VE CLASS OBSERVATION

This week is my schedule for class observation. Every day I went school at 7:30 a.m and went to mam dely's class.  I was surprised when mam dely and mam shai talked that I had to teach English in grade 4. I was surprised :( because during the interview with mam shai, I said that I would teach science in class 3. And all this time before leaving Indonesia , I prepared everything related to science.

I am a little afraid whether I can teach or not because English is not my major. Mam Dely always  strengthens me that I can! Mam dely said to me "you try to observe when I teach in class, it's easy, it's not as difficult as you imagine"

As long as I make observations in class, thank God I did not find any obstacles. Mam Dely is really helping everything I need. From morning to evening I was in class with mam dely, occasionally I helped to operate mam dely's laptop. Students at Graciano are very active, they are smart and often communicate with me.

One thing they often ask me is "mam, why are you using the hijab? Can I see your hair mam?"
yapss ...  we have to understand what they are asking. Be an elementary school teachers must be patient at all :)
They presented the results of the discussion

SCHOOL HISTORY II

The Defense of Graciano lopez Jaena Elementary school and Its School  Interest S.Y. 1983 -1984 to SY 1993-1994
The history of Graciano Lopez Jaena elementary School District III – La Paz, Division of Iloilo City would be incomplete if the events leading to the “Defense of Its School Interest” would be excluded. Herein below is the brief account of the events supported by documentary papers as taken from the “School District Supervisor’s Record S.Y. 1983-1984 to S.Y. 1993-1994.
In the School year 1984-1985, by virtue of the Memorandum of Agreement” entered into by the Iloilo city Mayor L. Herrera, Administrative of the CN Hodges Estate concurred by City Superintendent, ordered principal Roberto Belsario and School District supervisor Jesus Donasco Sr. to implement the “privilege” of the 20 families of CN Hodges privately owned Estate to have a 176 sq. meter road-right-of away passing across the school grounds. “ First phase implementation it demolished the school nutrition building and two concrete water tanks, despite the objection of the two aforementioned school officials. A case was filed by the schools P.T.A to prevent the second phase implementation, “to demolish the Home Economics Building and four classrooms.” In 1988,the P.T.A. withdrew the Case because it had no more funds to continue it and the several postponement made by the defendants, Iloilo City Government and CN Hodges Estate Intervener.  For 3 years, there was no trial for the merit of the case. There were several pre-trial conferences conducted purposely to exhaust the plaintiff’s resources.
In the SY 1993-1994, Mr. Jesus G. Donasco, School District Supervisor, concerned very much of the ill-effects of the “secret Memorandum of Agreement of 1985”to the school children and government properties costing million of pesos filed C.C. # 20239, questioning the legality of the aforesaid memorandum of agreement of 1985, in order to preserve the territorial and proprietor sites of the school. Mr. Timoteo Arsulo, new Superintendent of the schools as intervener provided financial and legal support for the defense of school interest.
For more than eleven months (the case no. 20239 was filed on February 7 1993) the court had not conducted trial for the merit of the case: it called for several pre conference trial only. It appeared that the defendants were resorting to the dilatory strategy they employed in the previous years 1985-1988. At the risk of the contempt of court plaintiff Jesus Donasco Sr. on January 18, 1993 wrote the offices of the President of the Philippines, Supreme Court, and Secretary of Justice appealing to their interventions to have speedy adjudication of the case both the community and school believe that the Lord would touch the hearts and minds of those very important people to intervene and solve the school top problem. God’s help was in the form of amicable settlement. Praise the Lord for this help!!! Speedy adjudication through amicable settlement. As a result of the appeal Judge Jesus Alonsagay and Iloilo city Mayor Mansueto Malabor arrange for all the litigants through their counsels to agree through Amicable Settlement on setting the aforesaid Case. This settlement was approved on October 7, 1993 with defendant Intervener ( CN Hodges Estate) getting what it wanted grates et amore” with the Iloilo City Government putting up all the expenses.
The tenants of the CN Estate had their road right of way constructed inside the school grounds (176 sq. meters). The H.E. and the 4 room classrooms building were not demolished. They were protected by a high concrete wall separating them from the road -  right of way. Classes were not disrupted on the area affected. A concrete wall separating the Iloilo City Cemetery and the school was constructed though it was not completely finished. The stipulated provision of the Settlement  - Concrete wall building the CN Hodges Estate and Graciano Lopez Jaena elementary School was not been carried out at this writing.
On January 4, 1995 retired District Supervisor  Jose Donasco Sr. and school principal Luz Suares requested Iloilo City Mayor Mansueto Malabor to comply fully all the provisions of the Amicable Settlement of 1993 specifically paragraph 7 which states. “7 that the Plaintiff and Intervener hereby  request the Iloilo City Government through the  City Mayor to provide a concrete wall bordering the CN Hodges Estate and the Graciano  Lopez Jaena elementary School and also the boundary of the Iloilo City Cemetery and the Graciano Lopez Jaena Elementary School “
In the compulsory retirement of the incumbent School District Supervisor on September 6, 1994, its office was faced out. It is now the responsibility entirely amicable settlement forecited  be fully implemented for the best interest of the school.

Measurement and Evaluation System

Assessment is a process that is used to keep track of learner's progress in relation to learning standards and in the development of 21st century skill; to promote self-reflection and personal accountability among students about their learning; and to provide bases for the profiling of student performance on the learning competencies and standard of the curriculum.

Teacher should employ classroom assessment methods that are consistent with curriculum standard. It is important for teachers to always     inform             learners about the objectives of the lesson, so that the latter will aim to meet or even exceed the standard. The teacher provides immediate feedback to students about their learning progress. Classroom assessment also measures the achievement of competencies by the learners. The evaluation system used in Graciano Lopez Jeana Elementary School are including short quizes, long quizes, homeworks, discussions, presentations, and also the mid-term and end-term exam.

#Day 7 (August, 21) Eid Adha'

Today is a holiday because it coincides with the day of the hero. Today is the day of Eid al-Adha. It feels like happy and sad :(
I'm happy  because  Eid adha day has come, and sad to have to celebrate the of Eid Adha in the other country . The sadness is almost the same as when we could not attend the ceremony on Indonesian independence day.

On that day we went to Lapaz to have Eid Adha prayer together. Alhamdulillah, one of our buddies has Islam, she is Asifa. Asnifa who took us to Lapaz for Eid Adha prayer together.
We leave at 7:00 a.m. and we ride the jeepney. Arriving there, we saw many Muslims. At that time I thought, Alhamdulillah it turns out that there are many Muslims here too. As usual, we sang takbir and then we prayed 2 rakaats.

At that time, I really felt sad and missed the atmosphere of Eid Adha at home. I miss praying with my family, it makes me shed tears.

At that time we only prayed without slaughtering cows or goats. I really miss seeing cows and goats slaughtered. After I finished praying, we took pictures together.

What is dinagyang ?

The Dinagyang Festival is a religious and cultural festival in Iloilo CityPhilippines held on the 3rd Sunday of January, or right after the Sinulog in Cebu and the Ati-Atihan Festival in Kalibo, Aklan. It is held both to honor the Santo Niño and to celebrate the arrival on Panay of Malay settlers and the subsequent selling of the island to them by the Aeta's

Dinagyang began after Rev. Fr. Ambrosio Galindez, the first Filipino Rector of the Agustinian Community and Parish Priest of the San Jose Parish introduced the devotion to Santo Niño in November 1967 after observing the Ati-Atihan Festival in the province of Aklan. On 1968, a replica of the original image of the Santo Niño de Cebu was brought to Iloilo by Fr. Sulpicio Enderez of Cebu as a gift to the Parish of San Jose. The faithful, led by members of Confradia del Santo Niño de Cebu, Iloilo Chapter, worked to give the image a fitting reception starting at the Iloilo Airport and parading down the streets of Iloilo.

In the beginning, the observance of the feast was confined to the parish. The Confradia patterned the celebration on the Ati-atihan of Ibajay, Aklan, where natives dance in the streets, their bodies covered with soot and ashes, to simulate the Atis dancing to celebrate the sale of Panay. It was these tribal groups who were the prototype of the present festival.

A participant of Dinagyang Festival
In 1977, the Marcos government ordered the various regions of the Philippines to come up with festivals or celebrations that could boost tourism and development. The City of Iloilo readily identified the Iloilo Ati-atihan as its project. At the same time the local parish could no longer handle the growing challenges of the festival.

Dinagyang was voted as the best Tourism Event for 2006, 2007 and 2008 by the Association of Tourism Officers in the Philippines. It is one of few festivals in the world to get the support of the United Nations for the promotion of the Millennium Development Goals, and cited by the Asian Development Bank as Best Practice on government, private sector & NGO cooperatives

I'm lucky to be able to wear this costume, and I'm proud of the iloilo culture!

City tour part II

okay ... I will continue the city tour story. After we ate traditional food, we rushed to Vietnam restaurant for lunch. yapssss this is my first experience eating at Vietnamese restaurant hehe.

we eat seafood and Vietnamese specialties.

After we had lunch, we headed to the office of Mayor Iloilo. The office is called city hall. We met directly with the mayor and talked about the city of iloilo. We are very luckily to meet him.

After meeting and talking with the mayor in the meeting room, we were welcome to see the iloilo area clothing collection and we were allowed to wear it.

The woman helped me to hold my clothes, because it was so heavy, I smiled while holding back the weight :(

we took picture with dinagyang costume.

wopssssss ... the clothes are so cool! the clothes that I wear are very heavy, around 5-10 kilograms. Because it was so heavy I decided to take off his clothes and only wear his headdress, his headdress was also very heavy, around 3-6kg

After we finished wearing traditional clothes, we rushed to the top floor ( rooftop) to see the city of iloilo
Omg, the scenery is very beautiful. The city of iloilo is surrounded by loose seas. I want to go back there huhu :(

And before we go home we stop by the old church, called the cathedral church. The church is very beautiful, the building is old but still standing firm. This church is one of the largest and oldest churches in the city of ilolilo

#Day 5 (August,20) Flag ceremony and city tour

Today is Monday and our schedule is to attend the ceremony, after that we will go for a city tour.
At the time of the ceremony, we climbed onto the stage and introduced ourselves in front of all ISATU students. This is a pride for me because I use my campus environment and can introduce myself to all ISATU students.

After the ceremony was over, we headed to the first place, the house that was once occupied by the Philippine president (I forgot his name hehe). The building is old, but still very well maintained. At first we were reluctant to enter because like a haunted house if from the front, it was very scary. But when it enters it, we can see historical relics in the house.

I took picture in front of the house

it's so scared huhu

we took picture together (gembs family hehe)

After that we went to the next destination, we went to  traditional food place, where we were treated for the umpteenth time by mam nam. We ate barcuilos with ice cream. wakakak how happy we are when we get free food continuously hehehe
